Tuvalu first to update seafarer legislation

Tuvalu became the first country in the Pacific Islands region to pass amended legislation addressing the 2010 amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention).  The passing of the amended legislation on the 25 June 2013, coincided with the International Day of the Seafarer.

Work on the amended legislation was led by the Chief Executive Officer of the Tuvalu Maritime Training Institute (TMTI), with the assistance of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and funding from the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
